The fund is a UK Charity which supports the Royal College of Surgeons for England. For many years, it has supported the College by funding Research Fellowships. The fund was set up by donations raised from Freemasons as part of the 250th Anniversary of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1967, and received a second significant sum in 2014 from Supreme Grand Chapter to mark the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Arch.

Freemasonry has had a long relationship with the Royal College of Surgeons, and the College has made presentations at Grand Lodge and Supreme Grand Chapter on a number of occasions, and at Provincial Grand Lodges and private Lodges.
